Soot or smoke at the flue
The burner isn't burning clean. It needs cleaning and setting up properly.
A smell of oil or fumes
Turn the boiler off, open a window and ring us. Fumes can mean carbon monoxide, and every home with a boiler should have a CO alarm.
It cuts out or won't light
Often a blocked nozzle or filter, or a dirty photocell. All three get checked on a service.
It's burning more oil
A boiler that's out of tune uses more oil for the same heat. A service sets it right.

How often does an oil boiler need a service?
Once a year. Oil burns dirtier than gas, so a yearly clean matters even more. Autumn is the best time, before the heating goes on full.
